Saturday Long Run - Last 18 miles of Austin Marathon course

THE MAP

Water stations are normal this week. You may want to carry your own water still, if you are starting way before or after the 5:45 start window that water is usually out there, or if you are ad libbing on route variations.

THE  ROUTES

4 Miles: Your map is here. Start at GZLs HQ. Take bike path along north side of Cesar Chavez out to dog pound loop, and cross under Cesar Chavez and go around Austin High School track on Veterans. Veterans up to LA Blvd. Left on LA Blvd over to Exposition. Turn around there, at the palatial HEB, and retrace your steps home. LA Blvd to Veterans, to Mopac, Veterans around to bike path north of Cesar Chavez. Then back to HQ.

6 Miles: Your map is here. Start at GZLs HQ. Take bike path along north side of Cesar Chavez out to dog pound loop, and cross under Cesar Chavez and go around Austin High School track on Veterans. Veterans up to LA Blvd. Left on LA Blvd over to Exposition. RIGHT on Exposition up to Enfield. RIGHT on Enfield over to and under Mopac, to Hartford Road. Veer RIGHT onto Hartford, down to Palma Plaza. LEFT on Palma Plaza, and the veer RIGHT onto W. 14th Street. 14th to West Lynn. RIGHT on West Lynn for just a short bit, to W. 13th. LEFT on W 13th over to a T into Windsor Road/Blanco Street. RIGHT on Windsor/Blanco down to W. 12th. LEFT on W. 12th and across and over to Guadalupe. [NOTE: There is a water stop just a couple of blocks north on Guadalupe, in the parking lot just south of the Christian Science church. It’s not a big detour to get a refreshing beverage there. You would then go back down Guadalupe and follow this route home] RIGHT on Guadalupe, down to 3rd Street, RIGHT on 3rd across to Seaholm and back to HQ.

8 Miles: Your map is here. Start at GZLs HQ. Take bike path along north side of Cesar Chavez out to dog pound loop, and cross under Cesar Chavez and go around Austin High School track on Veterans. Veterans up to LA Blvd. Left on LA Blvd over to Enfield. Right on Enfield over to and under Mopac, to Hartford Road. Veer RIGHT onto Hartford, down to Palma Plaza. LEFT on Palma Plaza, and the veer RIGHT onto W. 14th Street. 14th to West Lynn. RIGHT on West Lynn for just a short bit, to W. 13th. LEFT on W 13th over to a T into Windsor Road/Blanco Street. RIGHT on Windsor/Blanco down to W. 12th. LEFT on W. 12th and across and over to Guadalupe. LEFT on Guadalupe, up to the water stop in the parking lot on your right between 13th and 14th. Take W. 13th over to Lavaca (towards the Capitol). RIGHT on Lavaca down to 11th. LEFT on 11th to Congress. RIGHT on Congress down to 3rd Street, RIGHT on 3rd across to Seaholm and back to HQ.

RIGHT (south) on San Jacinto through campus. Veer right at talking oil derrick, and take San Jacinto up up past the Capitol, to 11th. RIGHT on 11th to Congress. LEFT on Congress down to 3rd Street, RIGHT on 3rd across to Seaholm and back to HQ.

Right on W. 34th over to Speedway, then take a LEFT on Speedway up to 34th. This is a quick zig zag. RIGHT on 34th over to Duval. RIGHT on Duval down to merge with San Jacinto, and on to Dean Keeton. Continue south on San Jacinto through campus. Veer right at talking oil derrick, and take San Jacinto up up past the Capitol, to 11th. RIGHT on 11th to Congress. LEFT on Congress down to 3rd Street, RIGHT on 3rd across to Seaholm and back to HQ.

Right on W. 34th over to Speedway, then take a LEFT on Speedway up to 45th. RIGHT on 45th over to Red River. RIGHT on Red River down to W. 41st (at the golf course). RIGHT on W. 41st over to Duval. LEFT on Duval down to merge with San Jacinto, and on to Dean Keeton. Left on Dean Keeton over and up to and under/over I-35. On East side of I-35, take a right on Lafayette, which changes names to Chicon in a block or so, and take Chicon down to E. 12th Street. Left on E. 12th over to Pleasant Valley Road. Right on Pleasant Valley down to Webberville Rd/Pedernales. RIGHT on Webberville/Pedernales down to Holly power station, and join northside trail there to return trail back to HQ.

20 Miles: Your map is here. You will track with your 18 mile friends above, and then will depart from them at the metal bathroom sculpture on the trail near Milago Condos, you will exit the trail to Rainey Street. You will go up Rainey Street to a T intersection, which is Driskill Street. Take a LEFT on Driskill over to Red River. RIGHT on Red River up up to 11th Street. LEFT on 11th up to the Capitol, and then you take a LEFT down Congress. That hill on 11th is in your racecourse. Ugh. LEFT on Congress down to 3rd Street. RIGHT on 3rd over to Trader Joe’s, and around to Electric Avenue and HQ. Take the slightly longer path around the dog park as shown at HQ to get up to about 19.8 miles. You completists know what to do to get up to 20.0.

22 Miles: For you folks looking for the full 22, I would follow the 20 mile pals above, and instead of taking 3rd street back to HQ, I’d cross the Congress bridge to southside trail, and do a couple of leisurely loops of the full Auditorium Shores area, which are nice and flat and a relief after all the hilly stuff. Finish by crossing on Pfluger footbridge to HQ.

RACE SPECIFIC WORKOUTS

·      Jan 19th, 2025 (Houston): Run smart, run with joy!

·      Feb 8th, 2025 (Mesa): Taper madness begins. 14-18 miles, with last 8-10 miles at honest MGP. Start easy, and then finish last 8-10 miles at MGP.

·      Feb 16th, 2025 (Austin): 20-22 miles. Add 1-2 miles to your last longer long run, up to that 22 mile max.

·      March 2nd, 2025 (Tokyo): 18-20 miles. Add 1-2 miles to your last longer long run, up to that 22 mile max.

·      April 13th, 2025 (Mountains 2 Beach): 12-16 miles. Add 1-2 miles to your last longer long run, up to that 16 mile max.

·      April 21st, 2025 (Boston): 10-12 mile recovery long run. Back off from last week.

·      April 27th, 2025 (London, Eugene): 10-14 miles. Add 1-2 miles to your last longer long run, up to that 14 mile max.
