Saturday Long Run [Click for Details]: City start and Trail loops with greenbelt outside Longhorn Dam

START TIMES

Start time is 5:45am. If you start way before or after the 5:45am start time, note that you may be ahead of or out after the water team has done their work.

THE MAP

Water stations are normal this week. You may want to carry your own water still, if you are starting way before or after the 5:45 start window that water is usually out there, or if you are ad libbing on route variations.

THE ROUTES

NOTE: We’ve added a 3 mile loop outside Longhorn Dam for folks going 14+ miles, so check that out before you run Saturday morning.

ANOTHER NOTE: If you are going 7 miles or more, stay on the bike path/trail on the left side of 4th street to go past the street barriers.

3 Miles: Your map is here. This is a clockwise Pfluger footbridge to Mopac trail loop.

4 Miles: Your map is here. This is a clockwise First St. bridge to Mopac trail loop.

5 Miles (Two Options): Your map is here. This is a clockwise Congress bridge to Mopac trail loop. Alternatively, if you want to start with the rest of the folks, then here is an optional route (be sure and check with your pace pals about which route to choose). Alternate map is here. Start at HQ, then Electric Avenue to Seaholm, across 3rd Street to the Convention Center. At the Convention Center, take a LEFT up to 4th Street. Right on 4th under I-35 to east side, and take a RIGHT on Waller Street (not Waller Creek, y’all). Waller down to Holly. LEFT on Holly over to Comal. RIGHT on Comal down to Festival Beach Road. RIGHT on Festival Beach Road back to I-35 and northside trail. Take NS trail back to HQ.

7.2 Miles: Your map is here. Start at HQ, then Electric Avenue to Seaholm, across 3rd Street to the Convention Center. At the Convention Center, take a LEFT up to 4th Street. Right on 4th under I-35 to east side, and stay on 4th across to Rbt. Martinez Jr. Street. Right on Martinez down to Canterbury. Left on Canterbury to Pleasant Valley. Right on Pleasant Valley, across Longhorn Dam, to southside trail and boardwalk to Pfluger footbridge. Cross on footbridge back to GZLs HQ.

10 Miles: Your map is here. Start at HQ, then Electric Avenue to Seaholm, across 3rd Street to the Convention Center. At the Convention Center, take a LEFT up to 4th Street. Right on 4th under I-35 to east side, and stay on 4th across to Rbt. Martinez Jr. Street. Right on Martinez down to Canterbury. Left on Canterbury to Pleasant Valley. Right on Pleasant Valley, across Longhorn Dam, to southside trail and boardwalk all the way back to Mopac. Cross to northside, and finish to Veterans and bike trail along north side of Cesar Chavez back to GZLs HQ.

12 Miles: Your map is here. Start at HQ, then Electric Avenue to Seaholm, across 3rd Street to the Convention Center. At the Convention Center, take a LEFT up to 4th Street. Right on 4th under I-35 to east side, and stay on 4th across to Rbt. Martinez Jr. Street. Right on Martinez down to Canterbury. Left on Canterbury to Pleasant Valley. Right on Pleasant Valley, across Longhorn Dam, to southside trail and boardwalk all the way back to Mopac. Cross to northside, and take Veterans up to Lake Austin Blvd, over to  Exposition. RIGHT on Expo up to 12th Street, the street at the north end of the O. Henry middle school track. Turn around there, and return Exposition to LA Blvd, to Mopac, and finish to Veterans and bike trail along north side of Cesar Chavez back to GZLs HQ.

14 Miles: Your map is here. Start at HQ, then Electric Avenue to Seaholm, across 3rd Street to the Convention Center. At the Convention Center, take a LEFT up to 4th Street. Right on 4th under I-35 to east side, and stay on 4th across to Rbt. Martinez Jr. Street. Right on Martinez down to Canterbury. Left on Canterbury to Pleasant Valley. Right on Pleasant Valley, across Longhorn Dam, and head to southside trail. You will diverge from your 10-12 mile pals here. Curl under and through Longhorn Dam to east side of dam. Trace path around softball fields to your left, winding around until you join the greenbelt along the creek there. Creek will be on your right, and you’ll be heading south. Follow the path into the shaded woods, and hang left at the first fork. At the next trail intersection, take a left and cross the creek on the concrete path over. Follow that main trail until your watch beeps 5.2 miles or so, at a junction of three trails. Turn around there, and retrace your trail steps back to greenbelt, around softball fields, under the dam, and back to southside trail.  Take southside trail and boardwalk all the way back to Mopac. Veterans up to Lake Austin Blvd, where you will turn around and head back to Mopac. Finish to Veterans and bike trail along north side of Cesar Chavez back to GZLs HQ, and a victory loop of the dog park in front of the HQ condos.

Veterans up to Lake Austin Blvd, and then LA Blvd out to Enfield (at Mozart’s), and hang a hard right onto Enfield, over to Exposition. South (right) on Expo down to LA Blvd, and back to Mopac. Cross to southside trail one more time, and head back to Pfluger bridge, crossing to GZLs HQ. NOTE:  a victory loop of the dog park in front of the HQ condos will get you nice and close to 18 on the nose.

Turn around there, and retrace your trail steps back to greenbelt, around softball fields, under the dam, and back to southside trail.  Take southside trail and boardwalk all the way back to Mopac. Veterans up to Lake Austin Blvd, and then LA Blvd out to Enfield (at Mozart’s), and hang a hard right onto Enfield, over to Exposition. South (right) on Expo down to LA Blvd, and back to Mopac. Cross to southside trail one more time, and head back to S. Congress bridge, curling up and over LB Lake on Congress bridge to northside trail, returning to GZLs HQ.

22 Miles: For the lone Jack and Jill marathoner, to get over the 19.4 listed above, add your favorite extra mile or two as you see fit.

RACE SPECIFIC WORKOUTS

HERE ARE SUGGESTED LONG RUN WORKOUTS FOR RACES THAT ARE IN THE FUTURE. IF YOU AREN’T RACING ANY TIME SOON, KEEP YOUR FITNESS BY ALTERNATING A LONGER LONG RUN AND A RECOVERY LONG RUN ON SUCCESSIVE WEEKENDS, DEPENDING ON YOUR CURRENT TRAINING LEVELS. (Ex: Alternate a 10-12 mile run with an 8-10 mile run).

  • July 29th (Jack and Jill Marathon): 20-22 miles. Add 1-2 miles to your last longer long run, up to that 22 mile max.

  • September 9-10th (Big Cottonwood, Tunnel): 14-18 miles. Add 1-2 miles to your last longer long run, up to that 18 mile max.

  • September 17th (Sydney): 10-14 mile recovery long run. Back off from last week.

  • September 24th (Berlin): 12-16 miles. Add 1-2 miles to your last longer long run, up to that 16 mile max.

  • October 1st (Twin Cities): 10-12 mile recovery long run. Back off from last week.

  • October 8th (Chicago): 10-14 miles. Add 1-2 miles to your last longer long run, up to that 14 mile max.

  • October 15th (Cape Town): 10-12 miles. Add 1-2 miles to your last longer long run, up to that 12 mile max.

  • October 28-29th (Indy, Marine Corps): 9-12 miles. Add 1-2 miles to your last longer long run, up to that 12 mile max.
