Thanks, Mike Gitre!
Mike has been working with the Hyatt hotel to get some trail deterioration issues addressed behind the hotel. There are frequently excessive puddles there and Mike hopes to resolve that. The Hyatt and the City of Austin did some repairs and put new crushed granite to fill in the low spots.

What prompted you to join Gazelles and when did you join?
I joined Gazelles in September of 2010 not too long after hearing Gilbert tell his story at the Catholic Charities Luncheon. My heart was forever touched and inspired as I listened to him speak. I just knew I had to run with Gilbert. I was going through one of the hardest times of my life as my best friend, my Mom, was in her final stages of Breast Cancer. Just one month after joining the Gazelles she passed away. I am forever grateful for the friendships/family I’ve made in this wonderful group and for Gilbert’s positivity that truly carried me through it all. You guys are solid!!!! Thank you
Which group do you run with?
I run with the Tuesday/Thursday 5:30am group sometimes referred to as “the crazy train”... Super early and fast :) I’m in constant awe of this group, totally inspired and most of all they keep me humble! A special place in my heart will always be with my original group of “Friendlies” who I ran with for many years in the Mon/Wed 9:15am group. Lots of good memories and laughs running around the track with those girls at The School for the Deaf!! Makes me smile
What's your favorite workout and why?
I would have to say that Fartleks are my favorite workouts. I love the varying pace of fartleks as well as the strength building component of the workout. It not only strengthens my body, but also my mind pushing me to keep going when I want to stop:) Great for race training!! Plus, I just love the trail. It brings me joy.
How has Gazelles changed your running/life?
How has the Gazelles changed my life/running? I could talk for days about this topic. To make it short and sweet, running with the Gazelles for the past 8 years has not only heightened my awareness of who I am, but of the power that lies in each and every one of us that I have seen/felt through this sport! It has challenged me in more ways than one to believe in what I have doubted and doubt what I have believed. Running has become one of my greatest teachers and for that I am grateful! The friendships that I have formed in this group are lifelong. The bonds that we share on/off the track, hills, trail, and road are forever there.
What’s your favorite Gilbert-ism or best story about him?
There are so many things about Gilbert that I love and so many stories. I think one of my favorites is the very first time I went to run with the Gazelles. I had stopped running for almost a decade and really doubted my ability to run without walk breaks. I had the desire in my heart to one day qualify for the Boston Marathon and knew if anyone could help me get there it would be Gilbert! Sure enough, I told him that first day that I didn’t think I could run without walking. He turned to me in true Gilbert fashion with that look in his eye, a smile on his face, and reassured me it was all in my head that I just needed to go out there and run!! Of course, he knew exactly what he was talking about because I never had to take walk breaks again and four months later I qualified for my first Boston Marathon in Houston. That’s what I love the most about Gilbert. His positivity and joy bring out the best in people! He’s not only taught me to believe in myself but to never give up on my dreams. Oh and by the way, you only get better with age:) I consider myself one lucky girl to have such a wonderful coach and friend.
