We had a great Labor Day workout! A lot of new Gazelles made it through their first circuit with smiles and joy! Great to see everyone.

Did you know? Labor Day became a federal holiday in 1894, and according to the US Department of Labor: "Labor Day, the first Monday of September, is a creation for the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country."

Cross Country Racing Tips

Note: This week's tip focuses on racing tips for Cross Country runners in their upcoming season, but apply equally to adults for any race.

  • Get enough sleep

  • Skip the ice cream and make good food choices leading up to the race

  • Hydrate

  • Calm your nerves. Listen to music before your race, meditate, laugh with friends, etc.

  • Be in the moment

  • Do a proper warmup and do your normal routine: warmup, drills, strides

  • Start slow and pace yourself—it's easy to go out too fast. Be patient and finish strong.

  • Stick to the plan given by your coaches. Trust your training / coach and the process.

  • Do a proper cool down so you're not sore the next day.

  • Be confident and believe in yourself.

  • and always, Run with joy!

2018 Family Photo Day and Gazelle Foundation Bake Sale

Not only are Gazelles amazing runners, they are also amazing bakers! Bring cash on Saturday, September 15 for the annual Gazelle Foundation Bake Sale. All proceeds go directly to the Gazelle Foundation.

And if you've got a favorite dessert, please consider making it and donating it to the bake sale!

Member Highlight: Trini Heide

What prompted you to join Gazelles and when did you join?
I’ve been running on and off with Gazelles my whole life. My mom has been a Gazelle since 2009 (and had known him before that), and I’ve known Gilbert for almost my entire life. Last year was my freshman year in high school, and I decided to do Cross Country. I’d done CC and Track in middle school and ran with Kid Gazelles on and off, but I’d never been a “serious” runner. I had always focused on other sports. That year, I realized I had a knack and love for running and it became my focus. Gilbert coached me for my high school track season and I did really well! I am now a sophomore at Austin High and trained with Gazelles all summer to prepare for this season. 

Which group do you run with?
Usually I run with the Summer High School Group, but during track I was running with the Tue/Thurs 7am group. Everyone is always so friendly!

What's your favorite workout and why? 
Ever since I was little, I loved circuit and hated fartlecks. Now, I still love circuit, but have developed a love for 1000m repeats and even fartlecks!

How has Gazelles changed your running/life?
I owe all of my success in long distance track and CC to Gilbert. He’s always pushed me to do my best and been an amazing coach.

What's your favorite Gilbert-ism or best story about him?
When I was really little and barely running, Gilbert told my mom that one day, I would be an amazing runner. I am hoping to fulfill his prediction!

  • The Austin Distance Challenge starts in September with the CASA Superhero Run 5k on September 16. September 6th is the last day of all-in-one registration. After that, registration must be done separately for the Distance Challenge and each individual race.

  • Good luck to all running the Zilker Relays this Friday, September 7. If you're not running, head out and cheer on your fellow Gazelles!

  • Good luck to Gazelles running the Patagonia Marathon this weekend.

  • Congratulations to the younger Gazelles on their recent cross country meet, the AISD Invitational. Coming up this week is the St. Andrews Middle School Invitational on Friday, and the St. Andrews XC Invitational on Saturday.

  • For the youth runners, a reminder that The Loop sells kids shoes, starting as small as size one. They also have cross country spikes. Stop by and try on a pair!
