How long have you been a runner?
I was lucky enough to run the London Mini Marathon in 1993, which is a race for kids that live in London that takes place on the final 2.6 miles of the full London Marathon course. That section of the course has truly amazing crowd support, and crossing the line I promised myself that one day I would run the full race. I procrastinated for a number of years until I found out that I was moving to Austin, which prompted me to sign up for charity places in the 2006 and 2007 London Marathons, which was the beginning of my marathon addiction.
Which group do you run with?
In my time at Gazelles I've alternated between the Monday/Wednesday and Tuesday/Thursday 5:30am groups.
What's your favorite workout and why?
For a mid-week workout I relish the challenge of the progressive and tempo runs, and for longer runs it would have to be Mount Bonnell as the view from the top makes it all worth it, especially if you make it in time for sunrise.
What prompted you to join Gazelles and when did you join?
When I moved to Austin in October 2007, I signed up for the distance challenge as a way to prepare for the 2008 Austin Marathon. During the course of those races I met several Gazelles who encouraged me to join, which I did did in March 2008.
What's your favorite Gilbert-ism or best story about him?
It would have to be "stand tall like John Wayne", which is something I consistently fail to do...hopefully being better about doing the 20x20s after workouts will help hehe. There have been so many wonderful moments, including words of encouragement, and consoling words when things haven't gone as I'd hoped. I'll share a recent story that is typical of Gilbert's zest for life, and the joy he takes in helping others...it was the end of a core workout and I'd once again botched the "higher open" exercise so he took me to one side to help me do it correctly...after about 10 minutes I (mostly) did it properly, and I just remember how he was almost giddy with excitement at being able to help me. We are incredible fortunate to get to spend time with him.
