This Week With Gazelles: May 28 - June 3
It was a great start to the week for over 50 Gazelles, family and friends at the Gazelle Memorial Day community workout in Zilker Park. Adults and kids rocked the workout with the kids reminding us all what it means to have fun. Gilbert led the group through a circuit followed by 20/10 – a shortened version of the 20/20 workout (see end of this post) – and we finished off with the circle of trust. Thank you for joining and celebrating this day with Gazelles!
As always, we like to begin with race congratulations! Alisa Leon (2:09:04) and Kristen Boyd (2:12:22) both completed the Mountains 2 Beach Half Marathon this past weekend. Great job runners!
Another running incident: Unfortunately, this is the third week in a row we need to report an incident involving a runner. This one happened Sunday 5/27 on the Brushy Creek Trail in Round Rock. As always, we want to remind you to be aware, run with others and stay safe.
Gazelles Yoga with Angie Stokes-Wichersham starts Sunday, June 3 at 8:30am at Gazelles HQ. Bring your own mat.
Next week (June 4-8) is the first Youth Gazelles summer camp as well as the start of High School Gazelles. No sleeping in, we'll see you at 8am!

Good luck to those running races next weekend in Newport, Oregon and San Diego! And in two weeks, we have one Gazelle running the Comrades Marathon for the first time. According to the race's website, "race distance is approximately 89km (about 55 miles.) The distance is subject to change and will be confirmed in the final race instructions." The course runs from Pietermaritzburg to Durban South Africa. Run With Joy!

June 7: The Maudie's Moonlight Margarita Run – fund raiser for The Trail Foundation.
June 7: Global Running day Cap10K – free to participate.
June 9: Beer Mile ATX – raises money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and will be at The Yard in south Austin. Gazelles get a $5 discount. Go to the members-only forum for details.

Fall Marathon and Half Marathon Training
Training with Gilbert's Gazelles for October marathons and half marathons starts June 4! Some October races to consider are St. George, Chicago, Twin Cities, Lake Tahoe, Baltimore, Marathon 2 Marathon, Marine Corps and others. If you haven't committed, but are still thinking about a September race, it's not to late to sign up! Some September races that Gazelles are training for include Berlin, Wineglass, and Patagonia. Register for training today!
Member Highlight: Stella Harper
How long have you been a runner and when did you join Gazelles?
I started running many years ago when I was a freshman at the University of Texas (before Gu energy gel was invented). I began running with Gazelles in 2009.
Which group do you run with?
I hop around, but usually M/W downtown.
What's your favorite workout and why?
Track workouts are my favorite, especially 800's. Sometimes I pretend that I'm as fast as Jessica Ennis, but my watch tells a different story.
What prompted you to join Gazelles and/or why do you run with Gazelles?
I had been running solo for many years and was looking to get faster and meet new people. I run with the Gazelles because it's the best running program in Austin. I don't know what I'd do without my running buddies!
What's your favorite Gilbert-ism or best story about him?
Between Christmas & New Years, Gilbert sometimes has us run without our Garmin/GPS watches along the trail so that we run with joy and not for time on the watch. One year, Gilbert hid behind some bushes and jumped out in front of us as a 'surprise'. I screamed and took off running at lightning speed pace. I think that was my fastest mile ever!

Do you know 20/20?
It's 20 exercises/20 reps. This workout is a series of exercises collected by Gilbert over his years as both an athlete and a coach. The exercises are designed to strengthen and stabilize running related muscles and joints in order to make you a stronger runner and less prone to injury. Gazelle members can view the list of exercises here, but to learn the proper execution of each, you have to come to circuit workouts with Gilbert! Gilbert recommends doing this workout several times a week, mostly after recovery runs and/or long run.

Running the Moonlight Margarita Run? Come to the shop at 7pm to warm up with us. For those not running, it’s bring your own lawn chair to set up at our usual cheer station/tailgating (corner of Cesar Chavez and Sandra Muraida Way). Hang out with us after the run!
