This Week With Gazelles: April 9-15, 2018
Congratulations to all the Gazelles who raced this past weekend. The main event was the Cap10K (see the Gazelles who ran at the end of this post), but there was also the Texas Senior Games in San Antonio where Taylor Sherwood took first place in both the 400m and 800m and second in the 1500m. Great job everyone!
Coming up this week for Gazelle workouts, we've got 1000's and a fartlek, and the Saturday long run heads to Mt. Bonnell. The Boston group will finish up with their last workouts before the big day, and London runners are starting their three week taper.
Speaking of Boston, good luck to the 30+ Gazelles who will be heading out to Boston at the end of the week. The Boston Marathon is on Monday, April 16th, Patriot's Day.
We need to extend a huge THANK YOU to Sonya Manson who has stepped down as coach of the Far West Gazelles after years of being their leader. We wish you well on all your future adventures, Sonya! Luckily, Jay Clement has stepped in as the interim coach to keep our Far West group on track.
Congratulations are in order for:
Gazelle Brandon Kirchner and his wife Summer, on the recent birth of their baby girl, born 4/1.
Gazelle's Sarah and Gerardo Orozco, on the recent birth of their baby boy, born 3/29.
Anna Wright, on recently finishing the Antarctica Marathon. We will be sharing her race report with you soon!

How long have you been a runner and when did you join Gazelles?
I have been doing something that resembles running for 10 years, but I really committed in 2010 as I prepared to run my first marathon. I joined Gilbert’s Gazelles in 2013 to train for the Houston Marathon with the goal to BQ. I did! Ever since that training season, I have been running with joy. There is no other way to do it.
Which group do you run with?
I run with Tues/Thurs 5:30 am with the hope my fellow Gazelle’s speed will rub off on me.
What's your favorite workout and why?
So hard to pick! If I had to pick one it would 5 X (600, 400, 200) @ 10K Pace. It always feels great to go fast and leave it all out on the track.
What prompted you to join Gazelles and/or why do you run with Gazelles?
My goal to qualify for Boston sparked my interest in joining a running group. The Gazelles was the obvious choice because it was an environment where I could be challenged and supported. If you are going to wake up at 4:45 a.m. three times a week to run until you lung explode and legs fall off, there is only one running group that can make it fun, Gazelles. I always walk away from training feeling grateful for what I get to be a part of. The community, the coach and the challenge make it one of the highlights of my day.
What's your favorite Gilbert-ism or best story about him?
So many to choose from! If I had to pick one it is his recent comment about “bringing home the gold.” I arrived late to training and everyone was gone, except some of the speedy Boston ladies. Gilbert was talking to them about race prep for the San Marcos Half the coming weekend. I asked what was going on and before I knew it, Gilbert had convinced me to run the race and to “bring home the gold.” Luckily, we all brought home the gold. Gilbert did say he was “always right.”

Cap10K Gazelle Participants:
Apologies if we missed your name as a Cap10k participant. Every effort was made to get all Gazelles, but we are human and are working off of provided data. Please let us know if we missed you and we'll be happy to add you in!
On a Sad Note
"The cleaners" (actual name: Four Son's Quality Cleaners) at Pecos and 35th has closed. Those who have run in Austin for years know of stopping at the cleaners to grab water from the hose that was always left out for runners. The sign is down, the doors are closed, and a "For Lease" sign is displayed. Hopefully the new tenant will keep the hose out!
