5K Wins Highlight Recent Race Results

May 9, 2007

It's tough to keep up with all the Gazelles and their races. Peruse a results list from any random local race, and you're bound to find at least two or three Gazelles at or near the top and half-a-dozen more plastered throughout the age group leaders.

With stalwarts such as Desiree Ficker, Pat Evoe, Paul Pugh, Kevin Kimbell, Richard Mendez, Dick Wilkowski and a host of others training with the Gazelles, it's tough for the huge pack of hard-working fellow Gazelles to shine through.

But Bryan Atkinson and Dawit Seyfu are the lastest Gazelles to register victories, at Shoes For Austin 5K and the Texas Round-UP 5K, respectively.

After profiling Atkinson as someone to watch after his fast BunRun 5K three weeks ago, RunTex has a nice write-up on Atkinson's win this past weekend. Speaking to RunTex Bryan said, "With the humidity this morning and those hills in the last mile, I was under no illusion that I could run as fast as I ran at the Bun Run. But I’m very happy to win a race. That’s a great feeling."

It was just a matter of time before Dawit, one of the fastest Gazelles, won a local race.

Thirteen of the fifty-four runners who ran under 19 minutes at the recent Schlotsky's Bun Run, and four of the top six, train with the Gazelles. Can you guess who they are?

There's also all of the marathoners who deserve mention. Julie Whittenburg, Monique Tenney, Amy Farley, Mark Casey and Lilliana Jackson were among finishers at the recent Oklahoma City Marathon. Gilbert finished second in the half-marathon, saying afterwards, " I didn't have high expectations leading to the half because I couldn't train like I should, but I am very pleased with my time considering the little training I had."

And of course there was this year's grueling Boston Marathon. Shannon Stokes, Nick and Ivi Kerrigan, Richard Tackett, Leslie Barclay, Renee Reynolds and Rachel Howell were just some of the brave Gazelles who ventured north.

Finally, there was the first installment of the Rogue's trail series, The Maze. Sarah Shuler blazed her way to third overall in the 30K race, breaking the women's course record by more than 10 min. Floyd Watson and John Reynolds weren't far behind. And is that Ivi Kerrigan near the top again? Oh, and your friendly neighborhood webmaster won the 10K race.

I'm sure I missed some great performances, but like I said, it's nearly impossible to keep up with the Gazelles.

Whew.
